Overview
Multicultural AUSTRALIAN (MA) is the national representative body for the Multicultural Community in Australia.
The history of MA can be traced back to National Liaison Committee (NLC).
National Liaison Committee For International Students, more widely known as NLC, is the national peak body for International Students in Australia.
NLC was formed in 1986 through the amalgamation of various state-based international student representative organisations across Australia to combat the introduction of the Overseas Student full-fee paying program.
Affiliated under NLC, Overseas Students Association (OSA) serves as a common platform for campus-based international student representative organisations with operations at major educational institutions across Australia.
The first independent OSA started its campus operations at The University of Adelaide (OSA@Adelaide) in 1985.
NLC was the founding member of National Union of Students (NUS) since its inception and had run its International Students Department from 1987 to 2009.
After the rape and murder of Chinese student JIAO Dan on 8 October 2007, Chinese Students Association (CSA) started to provide funding to NLC.
NLC decided to move away from NUS student politics and set up National Safety Hotline to provide safety guarantee and welfare assurance to International Students.
On 1 May 2008, National Liaison Committee For International Students Limited (NLC) was officially registered as a public company and Safety First - On Campus & Beyond campaigns were formally launched across Australia.
NLC has transformed from a student union model to become the future leadership platform for the Multicultural Community.
On national level, NLC is the voice of the International Students Community for advocacy and lobbying, focusing on five key areas of operations: culture, representation, compliance, welfare and leadership.
On campus level, NLC fully supports independent and autonomous OSA operations to provide international student support services and ensure democratic international student representation.
On 1 May 2009, NLCampaign: Why Not ME? For Representation And Welfare was launched in NSW Parliament House.
International Students SAFETYCard Program was formally launched to cover all International Students in Australia.
On 1 May 2010, NLCampaign: Multicultural Community Support For International Students Safety was launched in Sydney Town Hall.
Multicultural AUSTRALIAN was officially launched as the future leadership platform for the Multicultural Community in Australia.
On 21 March 2023, Harmony Day, Multicultural AUSTRALIAN Party (MAP) was founded to represent Multicultural AUSTRALIANS which are 20% of the total population in Australia.
For the past 35 years, NLC and Multicultural AUSTRALIAN have been working with all stakeholders: Multicultural Community, Australian & foreign government agencies, education providers and relevant community organisations to build a strong Multicultural Community.
Now we are even more determined and prepared to play the vital role as the peak representative body and build a stronger Multicultural Community in the years ahead.
